About The Appian Way

The Appian Way is an italian restaurant in Schenectady, New York. It is listed at 1839 Van Vranken Ave., Schenectady, NY 12308, which places it among the local businesses of Schenectady that residents and visitors turn to when they need this kind of service close by.

Italian restaurants, sub shops, calzone counters and Italian delis sit next to the pizzerias on this site because most of them bake pizza too, often from the same dough. Full-service Italian restaurants take reservations for dinner, add a tip line for table service (15-20% is customary) and usually run a cheaper lunch menu on weekdays. Sub and sandwich shops are counter-order and quick, with sizes by the inch or in half and whole lengths. Calzones and strombolis are priced like a medium pizza and are large enough to share. Italian delis and bakeries sell by weight and by the piece, and many close mid-afternoon.

The business lists hours on 2 days of the week. Typical hours are 5–7:30 PM. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. Schenectady is in New York, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Getting around Schenectady is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across New York's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Walked in 2 weeks ago and was told we needed reservation. Intrigued by the odd hours (5-7pm) 4.8 star reviews and reservation only, we made a reservation. We anticipated our experience all week! When we arrived we were greeted by our server. He was wearing sweat pants and a winter hat. We were brought bread. I went to wash my hands and noticed the bread was kept by the rest room uncovered on a table. I ordered the stuffed veal and my wife ordered the veal sorrentino. My dish was not rolled veal. it was prepared as a sandwich. Cheese between to small pieces of veal (cheese not melted) and the sauce was like water. I ordered fettuccini and was served angel hair with a few pieces of fettuccini in it. My wife's dish was also watery and she felt as though the veal was old (turning). Very disappointing! Especially when spending over $100 for dinner for two. One and done!

Wonderful family dinner at this lovely real Italian restaurant. The veal dishes were perfectly cooked - it’s hard to find veal parm anymore and theirs was great. Perfectly cooked with real homemade pasta on the side. All the rest in our party of 5 had wonderful meals and there were a number of take home containers. Great time and great food. Sorry no pictures, I was too excited to remember to take pictures!

The food was all so fresh and tasty, even the gelato was home made! Everyone who worked here was so kind, and the atmosphere was perfect. I told my husband several times that I felt like I was a kid again and at my aunts house. We’ll be back :)

Many years have passed since we dined at the Appian Way. Fortunately, very little has changed. Same sign, dining room and terrific homemade Italian food. We arrived at 5 o’clock and were the sole dinners for a while. All courses were well prepared and delicious. Their unique cold antipasto is a full plate, a meal in itself. The eggplant rollatini and linguini aglio are also sizeable and very tasty. It was a comfortable, reassuring and timeless dining experience.
